Matchpoint (The Matchmaker #2)Matchpoint by Elise Sax
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Maybe it was just my mood while I was reading this, but I just couldn't connect to the characters at all, and the plot seemed too silly to be enjoyable.

I received a free copy of this book through the Early Reviewer program on LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review.

Tangled Passion by Stanley_Ejingiri

Tangled PassionTangled Passion by Stanley Ejingiri
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This was an OK read, but I found myself skimming large parts of it. I think it was well-written and will appeal to a certain sort of reader, maybe those who look for historical fiction more than romance. It was different enough from what I normally like to read that I just didn't fully engage. I wish I could give it a better rating because it felt like the author put his heart into it and I hope it will find its way into the hands of readers who will appreciate it.

I received a free copy of this as part of the First Reads program through Goodreads.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I didn't feel this one quite as much as the previous book in the series, but it's still much better than a lot of other books I've read. Rio is as delicious as I expected him to be. If you're reading this series out of order, you'll at least want to read Shea & Nathan's book before this one.

The Darkest Hour (KGI, #1)The Darkest Hour by Maya Banks
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I'd really give this one 3 1/2 stars, but I'll round up to 4. Almost all of the bad things that happen to Rachel after she comes home should have been avoidable (or at the very least she should have been better protected), and that didn't sit well with me. I didn't dislike Rachel or Ethan, but I didn't love them either - together or separately. I'll see if I like Sam's story any better.

The Reason is YouThe Reason is You by Sharla Lovelace
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads program.

What a fascinating twist on paranormal romance! Suspenseful and full of genuine emotion but light and approachable enough that it was easy and enjoyable to read. The heat level was very low, but I didn't miss it too much. The conflicts with the small town bullies who never moved away and never managed to get a life will appeal to anyone who grew up in that sort of narrow-minded atmosphere. I really like this author's style and will definitely be looking into other books she has written.

Soul SuckerSoul Sucker by Kate Pearce
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Reviewed for TwoLips Reviews, LLC
4 Kisses, 1 Pepper (M/F, graphic sex)

As an empath, Ella Walsh is no stranger to things that go bump in the night. She works for the Supernatural Branch of Law Enforcement, or SBLE, and is a first responder whenever a regular citizen sees or experiences some weird supernatural occurrence. That monster under your bed? Yeah, it's not just your imagination.

Ella is almost twenty-seven years old, which means she's almost at the end of her career as an empath for SBLE. Much longer and it will be more than her psyche can handle without losing it. For most empaths, as they approach their twenty-seventh birthday, they have to choose between accepting a mate that the government selects for them, or going crazy. For an independent woman like Ella, that choice is not as easy as it would appear.

Our hero, Vadim Morosov, is a shifter sent from Russia to help Ella's team catch a serial killer. He's had a bad experience with an empath, so he's reluctant to trust Ella. He's also not very keen on divulging much information about himself, so he doesn't immediately inspire her trust either. This adds a nice sense of mystery to the story, as readers and characters alike wait to learn just who and what he is.

Ella is headstrong, independent, prickly, accustomed to keeping everyone at arm's length, impulsive and somewhat reckless because she resists accepting help from anyone, often preferring to go off on her own. She was ripped from a normal life at a very young age, so she has trouble trusting people. The fact thather job has filled her brain with other people's nightmares has had a negative effect on her interpersonal skills. Fortunately, Vadim lends her the strength and stability she needs, and gives her balance.

This was an interesting book, and I'd like to see a sequel or maybe a series coming from this. At times, it kind of has a Men In Black feel, which definitely appeals to me. When the human government realized they couldn't keep Otherworld beings from entering the human dimension, they decided it would be best to try and regulate it. It's sort of an immigration policy for creepy creatures. Overall, Soul Sucker was a captivating read written with Kate Pearce's brilliant flair for storytelling.

Coyote Heat (SEALs On Fire #1)Coyote Heat by Desiree Holt

Was it just me, or did the heroine make a spectacularly bitchy overreaction when the hero accidentally spilled a drink on her? My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed the first 2 books in this series - so much so that I was really excited to finally get this book - but sadly, I didn't like this one at all. See other 1 & 2 star reviews for some of the reasons. I actually made it almost to the end, but then Prissy (I'm deliberately calling her that because her character would hate it) made an utterly TSTL decision and I completely lost interest in their HEA, so I didn't bother reading the last few chapters.

Give Me MoreGive Me More by P.J. Mellor
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Completely, painfully disappointing. Just as an example, the heroine in the first story grabs the shirt of the hero as she falls into a water-filled grotto, so he falls into the water on top of her. First wanky words out of her mouth: "Did you have to fall on top of me?" Seriously, someone save me from stupid, bitchy heroines. The rest of the book didn't improve much at all.

This was really good, especially for being so short. The characters were nicely developed, the chemistry was amazing and it was deliciously hot. I'm tempted to get the rest of the series, but I have the impression there's a fair amount of angst in the next books so I might just leave it with this open-ended happy ending. I thought I could make it to the end of this one, even if I didn't love it. My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I really like this author and I did make it all the way to the end of this one, but I just didn't love it. I was annoyed by the heroine's view of nerds - it's just hard for me to imagine any adult as being so utterly clueless and condescending. The villain was predictable, I didn't feel any chemistry between the hero & heroine, and many parts of the book really dragged for me. But I love a good nerd hero and there aren't that many of them out there (alphas are obviously the trend), so I'll probably read more from this series someday.

Her Officer and Gentleman (Just Ask Reeves, #2)Her Officer and Gentleman by Karen Hawkins
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was pretty good and a fairly quick read. It was predictable, but that's OK, too. The characters were all likable and the H/H had great chemistry. My biggest complaint is the title. He was neither an officer nor a military man. At all. Not that it affects the plot at all, but I guess it bothers me when a title has absolutely nothing to do with the book. It makes me think the editor or publisher was just too lazy to be more creative, and didn't care much for accuracy. That's NOT smexy.

On Dublin Street (On Dublin Street, #1)On Dublin Street by Samantha Young
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was very well-written, but a rather emotionally exhausting read. There were several times I wasn't sure I wanted to continue reading it because the heroine had so many issues & I wasn't completely on board with her even deserving an HEA. Most of the time I wasn't sure what the hero saw in her beyond lust. But her brand of crazy was mostly understandable & she wasn't just bitchy for no reason (mostly), so I kept reading. It was written in first person and we don't get the hero's POV so that handicapped it for me, too. I stayed up late to finish it so I guess that says something.
