Edward Randall, Baron Carstairs, is no ordinary gentleman. He's a member of an elite group of people with magical powers who serve and protect the Crown from the Fae, a very powerful and deadly enemy who want to conquer and rule the world. Baron Carstairs is what's known as a Catalyst, which means he has the ability to draw magic from the earth and channel it to Sorcerers.

Carstairs is engaged to Alicia Hartwell, a twenty-five-year-old spinster with a reputation for being a cold fish. She's not deliberately cold, though. She's honestly unable to comprehend the emotions of others. As they share a private embrace the evening of their engagement party, Edward suddenly senses something that alarms him. He fears she may be under some sort of enchantment. He realizes that he can't break it for her without hurting her; she has to break it from the inside. Of course it couldn't be as simple as breaking the enchantment and they live happily ever after. They have serious obstacles to overcome, including her family, the Fae, and Edward's own resistance to falling in love.

I thought this was an interesting approach to explaining what would probably be considered an autism spectrum disorder today. Sometimes autism is described as being locked inside oneself. Wouldn't it be nice if the solution could be something as relatively simple as breaking an enchantment?

Fascinated is passionate and very hot. I loved the connection that blooms between Alicia and Edward throughout the book. Marissa Day has written this book with an interesting blend of subgenres; the paranormal elements gave it a very different flavor. I'd recommend this for anyone who likes historicals and paranormals, and is looking for something a little off the beaten path.
