When Darius Thorne finds Isabel Netherton in his winter garden, she's half dead. She rouses just enough to beg him not to call a doctor, and he realizes she's in some serious trouble. As he pulls off her frozen gloves to rub some circulation back into her hands, he sees the gold ring on her finger. She's married. He gives her shelter and she must be very careful to not be seen, so as they spend time together in relatively close confinement they fall in love. He knows a future between them is impossible for many reasons, but he's determined to save her from the monster she married. He devises a plan to blackmail Lord Netherton, a depraved and cruel individual in the extreme. Darius is facing his own danger as well, because of the ongoing threat to the Jaded. With everything that's happening to both of them, there's quite a bit of drama and suspense in this book.
I love an intellectual hero, and Darius is perfectly delicious. He's sweet, brave, devoted, loyal, and all-around lovable. Isabel is just as wonderful, and they work very well together. I defy anyone to read this and not root for their happy ending.
Renee Bernard also shows that she isn't afraid to write an utterly despicable villain. This isn't necessarily a book for squeamish readers, so be forewarned.
This has been a thoroughly enjoyable series. It just keeps getting better and better. Obsession Wears Opals can be enjoyed without having read the previous books in the series, but I encourage fellow readers to read the entire series. It is definitely time and money well spent. Ms. Bernard is truly a talented author to follow.
