I just finished reading an ARC of 'When Blood Calls' by J.K. Beck (aka well-known author Julie Kenner), and I have to post a rave. It was phenomenal! Dark, twisty, sexy, engrossing, smart -- overall, simply brilliant! I'm so glad they're releasing the next two books in the series soon ('When Pleasure Rules' will be out at the end of this month and 'When Wicked Craves' will be released at the end of October) because I hate having to wait too long between books, especially in a series that I really dig. Here's a snippet from my review of 'Simply Sinful' by Kate Pearce (also a TwoLips Reviews Recommended Read): 

I love straightforward characters, and Simply Sinful is filled with them. Just like she did in Simply Sexual, Kate Pearce employs refreshing honesty rather than relying on the tired ploys of scheming and lies found in some historical romances. This is how erotic historical romance should be written, and Ms. Pearce has solidified her position on my short list of favorite authors.

I loved seeing Abby's self-confidence blossom as she discovers her ability to arouse Peter. I also loved seeing Peter realize he’s both capable and worthy of love. This book is sizzling hot and perfectly provocative. Readers should be warned that this book contains explicit male-male sex, but it’s handled very tastefully. In fact, it’s really, really hot.

Simply Sinful has all the qualities I look for in a romance novel. I absolutely loved it.

6. I enjoy playing video games when I can, but I haven't played much since Rhys was born. Some of my favorites are: Diablo I & II, Baldur's Gate, Half Life, Halo I & II, Legacy of Kane, Doom III, and Fable.

Alas, my dear books are packed in boxes, not stored on bookshelves. We moved into a new home in January and a whole lot of stuff is still in boxes and probably will remain there indefinitely, because I like how things look without all the clutter. Right now I'm reading a great time travel romance by Sara Mackenzie called 'Return of the Highlander', and I'm really impressed with how the author is handling the time travel aspect.

I usually enjoy a good time travel romance, but this one is especially impressing me. Why? The hero has been sent to the present day, but it's not like SNAP, he's here, what's for breakfast? No, he has to work at being seen and heard (and eventually felt) by the heroine. I think that's a nice touch.

OK, here's an interesting mini challenge from the Book Crazy Blog for this week's Once Upon A Read-A-Thon: "pick your favorite book and/or character and pair it with a song and/or photo that reminds you of the person or setting in the book".


I love books and I love music, so this is a really fun one. But I don't think I can pick ONE favorite book, so I'm going with the book I'm just finishing up right now, 'Riding Wild' by Jaci Burton, from her Wild Riders series.

If you haven't read this series yet, you really need to check it out. I did it a little bit backwards and read some of the other books in the series first, but it was OK because they can be read out of order.

So the basic premise of the series is that the heroes are skilled thieves who now work for a secret government agency, stealing back things that have been stolen from the government, but can't be retrieved by conventional means. Here's the song that I'd pair with this series, from one of my favorite hardcore bands, Ministry:
